Catalán and his pregnant wife, Jenny Koeller, were killed on June 16, 1970. According to one theory, they were betrayed by a member of the ELN. Another theory suggests they were captured with CIA assistance and tortured before being killed. Koeller was struck in the base of the skull, while Catalán was poisoned.
