Early Career and Nationality Change

Turkish Citizenship:

In 1999, Ethiopian-born Turkish runner Alemitu Bekele debuted internationally at the World Cross Country Championships, placing 9th in the junior race. The same year, she acquired Turkish citizenship and began representing her new nation.

Record-Breaking 5000m and Olympic Debut

5000m World Record:

In 2004, Bekele shattered the 5000m world record with a time of 14.24,68.

2004 Olympics:

Two months later, she competed in the 2004 Olympics in both the 1500m and 5000m events but did not achieve significant success.

Silver Medals and Doping Ban

2007 World Championships Silver:

Bekele earned the silver medal in the 10,000m at the 2007 World Championships.
