Early Life and CareerElvira Popescu(née Mihaela-Eleonora Popescu) was born on May 10, 1894, in Bucharest, Romania. She studied acting at the Conservatorul de Artă Dramatică under the tutelage of Constantin Nottara and Aristizza Romanescu. Popescu made her stage debut at the National Theater of Bucharest at the age of 16, and in 1912, she starred in her first film, "Independența României."
Acting Triumphs in France
In 1924, following the encouragement of French playwright Louis Verneuil, Popescu moved to Paris. Verneuil crafted plays specifically for her, including "Ma Cousine de Varsovie," in which she played the lead role. Popescu also excelled in productions such as "Tovaritch" (1933), "Nina" (1949), "La Machine Infernale" (1954), and "La Mamma" (1957), the latter of which she reprised at the age of 84.
Theatrical Leadership
Popescu held leadership positions at the Théâtre de Paris (1956-1965) and theThéâtre Marigny (1965-1978). Her tenure marked a period of artistic excellence and innovation.
Personal Life
Popescu's personal life was as eventful as her professional one. She married three times: to comedian Aureliu Athanasescu, to Romanian Minister of Industry and Commerce Ion Manolescu-Strunga, and finally to Count Maximilien Sébastien de Foy, who passed away in 1967.

From the 1930s to the 1980s, Popescu resided in Mézy-sur-Seine, Yvelines. Her home became a popular gathering place for celebrities, including members of the French Academy, André Roussin, Louis Verneuil, Guy de Rothschild, Sacha Guitry, Jacques Chirac, Pierre Cardin, Pierre Mondy, and Valery Giscard d'Estaing.
Lasting Legacy
Elvira Popescu passed away on December 11, 1993, at the age of 99. She is remembered as an extraordinary actress and an icon of the Parisian stage. Her talent, charisma, and enduring influence continue to inspire generations of performers. She is buried at the renowned Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
