Biography of Elvis Crespo
Elvis Crespo, a merengue singer, was born on July 30, 1971, in New York City to Puerto Rican immigrant parents. He was named after the king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, as his parents were big fans of the legendary musician. When Elvis was six years old, his mother took him to Guaynabo, Puerto Rico.
At the age of fifteen, Elvis began his musical career as a vocalist in a youth group in his hometown. However, four years later, he unexpectedly met Anahí Cherruto, a Puerto Rican woman of Cuban descent, married her, and a year later, their son Elvis Francisco was born. The young family faced significant financial difficulties, and Elvis had to work as a manager in a laundry.
One day, a small music group offered him a summer job. Elvis Crespo became the vocalist of "Grupomania" not for a few months as he had planned, but for several years. In 1998, Crespo decided to say goodbye to "Grupomania" and released his first solo album, "Suavemente," entirely in the style of merengue-pop.
This album unexpectedly soared to the top of the Billboard charts and other music publications, with songs like "Suavemente," "Tu sonrisa," and "Llorando" being played on radio stations multiple times a day. The album was a fantastic success and received universal acclaim.
Due to his newfound fame, Crespo was immediately invited to appear in the American soap opera "All My Children." In the same year, he embarked on concert tours in Spain, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Italy, and later, Japan and Australia. His debut album sold over half a million copies, and several remix compilations of "Suavemente" were also released.
