Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Juan Luis Guerra's passion for music and drama ignited at an early age. By sixteen, he was captivating audiences with his voice in his school choir and strumming the guitar in his spare time.
Berklee Scholarship and Love
After graduating high school, Guerra enrolled in philosophy at the university for two years before receiving a scholarship to attend Berklee College of Music in Boston. It was during this time that he met his future wife, Nora Vega, and penned songs dedicated to her, such as "Ay! Mujer" and "Me enamoro de ella."
Birth of 4.40
In 1984, Guerra co-founded the musical group "4.40" with Roger Zayas-Bazan, Maridalia Hernandez, and Mariela Mercado. Their debut album, "Soplando," introduced their unique blend of folk merengue.
Rise to Fame and Solo Career
Maridalia Hernandez's departure in 1984 paved the way for Guerra to become the lead vocalist of 4.40. With the addition of Marco Hernandez and Adalgisa Pantaleon, the group released critically acclaimed albums like "Ojala que llueva cafe" (1990) and "Bachata rosa" (1991). These albums not only captivated the Americas but also spread the popularity of merengue to Europe.
