Elżbieta Witek: Polish Political Leader
Elżbieta Witek (born December 11, 1957) is a Polish politician who has served as the Marshal of the Sejm (speaker of the lower house of the Polish parliament) since 2019.
Early Life and Education
Witek was born in Nowa Sól, Poland. She graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy and History at the University of Wrocław in 1980.
Political Career
Solidarity MovementIn 1980, Witek joined the Solidarity trade union, which played a key role in the fall of communism in Poland. She was arrested and held for three months due to her opposition activities.
Local Politics
Witek began her political career in local government, serving as a deputy on the Jawor City Council from 2002 to 2005. She unsuccessfully ran for mayor of Jawor in 2002.
National Politics
Witek was first elected to the Sejm in 2005 as a member of the Law and Justice party. She served in the Sejm until 2015, holding various positions, including Minister without Portfolio in the cabinet of Beata Szydło.
In 2019, Witek returned to the government as Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration. She was elected Marshal of the Sejm on August 9, 2019.
