Early Life
Emanuel Ax, an American pianist, was born to Holocaust survivors Joachim Ax (1905-1969) and Hellen Ax (1907-2009), who were natives of Lviv, Ukraine. His father, a speech therapist, was imprisoned in the Lviv ghetto during the Nazi occupation. Ax began studying piano at the young age of six with his father.
Immigration and Education
In 1957, the family relocated to Poland, and in 1959, they moved to Canada, where Ax attended the Winnipeg Youth Music Club. In 1962, the family settled in New York City, and Ax enrolled at the Juilliard School, where he studied under Mieczysław Muenz. He graduated from Columbia University in 1970 and became an American citizen.
Awards and Recognition
In 1974, Ax won the Artur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv, and in 1979, he received the Avery Fisher Prize in the United States. In 2011, Ax became an honorary member of the New York Philharmonic Symphony Society, an honor bestowed after his 100th performance with the orchestra.
Repertoire
Ax's repertoire encompasses works by Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, and Richard Strauss. However, he is particularly known for his performances of contemporary composers, including Michael Tippett, Hans Werner Henze, John Adams, and Bright Sheng.
Collaborations
Ax has collaborated extensively with renowned musicians, including Isaac Stern, Yo-Yo Ma, and Jaime Laredo, forming a renowned piano quartet.
Accolades
