Early Life and Education
Emeliyan Antonovych, a prominent Ukrainian lawyer and public figure, was born on February 6, 1916, in the town of Dolyna to a judicial official. After completing primary school in 1924, he spent two years at a gymnasium in Dolyna. In 1926, he enrolled as a third-grade student at the Ukrainian Academic Gymnasium in Lviv. From 1930 onwards, he continued his studies at a gymnasium in Przemysl. In 1932, he joined the Catholic University in Lublin to pursue a degree in law.
Political Activism and Imprisonment
Antonovych became a member of the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN) before the war. His political activities led to his imprisonment for three years in a Polish prison and the Sachsenhausen concentration camp.
Academic Background
Throughout his life, Antonovych pursued education at various institutions, including the Academic Gymnasium in Lviv, the gymnasium in Przemysl, the Catholic University in Lublin, the Higher Trade Academy in Poznan, the Trade Academy in Berlin, and the Faculty of Law at the Ukrainian University in Prague.
Emigration to the United States
In December 1949, Antonovych emigrated to the United States. He settled in Washington, D.C., in 1950 and worked at the foreign representation office of the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Church (UHOL) from 1951 to 1960. During this period, he also served as the head of the Ukrainian Association of Washington for six years.
Later Career and Legacy
After 1960, Antonovych focused on farming. In 1980, he and his wife, Tatiana, founded the Emeliyan and Tatiana Antonovych Fund to support Ukrainian literature and Ukrainian studies. He passed away on February 28, 2008, in Lviv.
