Early Life and Education

Emerald Lilly Fennell was born on October 1, 1985, in West London, England. The daughter of jewelry designer Theodora and writer Shirley Louise, she grew up in a creative household. While her younger sister Coco became a fashion designer, Emerald yearned to follow in her mother's footsteps. She wrote spooky stories and vowed to move to America and pen murder mysteries when she grew up.

Fennell received her education at Oxford University, where she studied English Literature. During her time at college, she participated in student plays, which caught the attention of a television agent. Thus began her acting career.

Acting Career

Fennell's television debut came in 2006 with an episode of "Trial & Retribution." She went on to accumulate an impressive body of work, particularly in costume dramas such as "Albert Nobbs," "Anna Karenina," "Vita & Virginia," and "Victoria."

Her most notable role was that of Nurse Patsy Mount in the BBC One series "Call the Midwife," which she played from 2013 to 2017. Another high-profile project was "The Crown," based on the life and reign of Queen Elizabeth II. Fennell joined the cast in 2019, portraying Camilla Parker-Bowles, Duchess of Cornwall.

Writing Career

Concurrent with her acting career, Fennell pursued her passion for writing. In 2013, she released the children's fantasy novel "Shiverton Hall," followed by a sequel in 2014. Her first adult horror novel, "Monsters," was published in 2015.

Filmmaking Debut

In 2019, Fennell turned her hand to filmmaking, penning the screenplay for the thriller "Promising Young Woman." She also directed the film, casting Carey Mulligan as Cassie, a vengeful and calculating woman with a sweet exterior. Filmed on a shoestring budget in just 23 days, Fennell credits the cast and crew with bringing her vision to life.

Breakthrough with "Promising Young Woman"

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was met with critical acclaim. It was praised for its boldness, provocativeness, and topicality, tackling issues of male abuse and female objectification.

Recognition and Accolades

"Promising Young Woman" earned Fennell five Oscar nominations in 2021, including Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. She became the first British woman to receive a Best Director nomination and one of only six women in history to be nominated for the directing award.

Current Projects and Future Plans

After the success of "Promising Young Woman," Fennell collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber on the musical "Cinderella," which premiered in May 2021. She has also been tapped by DC Films to write the screenplay for a Zatanna film.
