Armenian Medical Activist

Emil Gabrielian was an Armenian medical activist who made significant contributions to the field of medicine. He was born in Armenia and pursued his education in various prestigious institutions.

Education and Early Career

From 1948 to 1952, Gabrielian studied and graduated from the Yerevan State Medical Institute in Armenia. He furthered his studies at the Institute of Pharmacology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR in Moscow from 1960 to 1961. In 1967, he conducted research at the Institute of Evolutionary Physiology and Biochemistry named after I.M. Sechenov in Saint Petersburg. Gabrielian also conducted surgical research at Glaxo Wellcome's laboratory at the University of Glasgow from 1968 to 1969. Later in 1969, he studied neurophysiology at the Nobel Institute of Neurophysiology at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm and the Laboratory of Clinical Neurophysiology at the University Hospital in Lund.

Medical Career

From 1954 to 1958, Gabrielian served as the chief physician and surgeon of the Artik Medical Association in the Armenian SSR. He then held the position of Deputy Chief Physician for Therapeutic Services and Surgeon from 1958 to 1959. Gabrielian worked as a senior laboratory assistant and assistant at the Department of Pharmacology at the Yerevan State Medical Institute from 1959 to 1968. He became an associate professor in 1968 and later served as the head of the department from 1988 to 1994. Gabrielian obtained his Candidate of Medical Sciences degree in 1963, followed by his Doctor of Medical Sciences degree in 1971. He also became a professor in 1972.

During his career, Gabrielian took on various leadership roles, including serving as the Vice-Rector from 1969 to 1971 and the Rector of the Yerevan State Medical Institute from 1971 to 1975. He was the head of the Research Laboratory of Circulation Pharmacology from 1972 to 2005. Additionally, Gabrielian served as the Minister of Health of the Armenian SSR from 1975 to 1989.

Later Contributions and Recognition

In 1991, Gabrielian became a member of the Scientific Council of the International College of Angiology in New York. He also became the director of the Scientific Center for Drug Expertise and Medical Technologies in 1992. Gabrielian held the position of President of the Pharmacological Society of Armenia in 1993 and became an academician in 1994, as a member of the National Academy of Sciences of Armenia.

Gabrielian's contributions extended beyond Armenia, as he served as a member of the Guideline Development Group for Essential Medicines of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva from 1995 to 1998. He was also a member of several international academies and councils, including the International Academy of Information and the New York Academy of Sciences.

Throughout his career, Gabrielian authored more than 350 scientific works, including books and guidelines. He received numerous awards and accolades for his outstanding contributions to the field of medicine.
