Biography of Paul Carroll
Early Life and EducationPaul Carroll is an American writer and speaker, specializing in topics such as business strategies and information technology. He graduated from Michigan State University at the age of 19 and obtained a master's degree in journalism from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.
Journalism Career
After completing his education, Carroll worked as an editor for his hometown newspaper, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. He then joined the team at the Wall Street Journal, where he worked for 17 years in the United States, Europe, and Mexico. Carroll's work at the Wall Street Journal had a significant impact on the business world, and he was twice nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. In 1996, he became a finalist for his coverage of the crisis following the devaluation of the Mexican peso.
Author and Speaker
During his time at the Wall Street Journal, Carroll wrote the book "Big Blues: The Unmaking of IBM," which became a bestseller in 1993. The book received widespread acclaim and was featured in major business publications such as the New York Times and China Times. Inspired by the success of his book, Carroll began giving lectures on how to avoid the mistakes made by IBM during the computer revolution.
Consulting and Publishing
In 1996, Carroll left the Wall Street Journal and became a partner at Diamond Management & Technology Consultants, where he provided consulting services to numerous large organizations. He also founded and served as the editor of Context magazine, which was published by Diamond Management. The magazine reached an audience of over 40,000 top-level executives seeking to understand how information technology could transform their businesses. Context magazine was recognized with numerous awards and was a finalist for the National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2000.
Focus on Business Failures
In 2003, Carroll embarked on a multi-year project that eventually became "Billion-Dollar Lessons: What You Can Learn from the Most Inexcusable Business Failures of the Last 25 Years." The book aimed to analyze the failures in the business world, as most authors focused on success stories. Carroll believed that studying the strategies and failures of companies could provide valuable lessons for success.
Personal Life
In his free time, Paul Carroll enjoys watching his daughters compete in equestrian sports, soccer, and skiing. He currently resides in Granite Bay, California, with his wife Kim and their children.
