Early Life and EducationEmil Lauffer was born into a family of pharmacists in Prague, Bohemia, on September 22, 1837. His older brother Ferdinand Josef Lauffer, a poet, participated in the Czech Uprising of 1848 and was forced to flee into exile after its suppression.
Lauffer studied art at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, where he was exposed to the latest artistic techniques and theories. Inspired by his time in Vienna, he returned to Prague and established himself as a skilled artist and educator.
