Emile Amagat was a renowned French physicist and member of the prestigious Paris Academy of Sciences, elected in 1902. He was also recognized internationally as a Foreign Member of the Royal Society of London from 1897.

Early Life and Education

Amagat was born in Saint-Satur, France, in the year 1841. His humble beginnings did not deter him from pursuing his intellectual curiosity.

Academic Career

In 1867, Amagat embarked on a teaching career as a professor at the Central Gymnasium in Fribourg, Switzerland. He subsequently held similar positions at the Catholic University of Lyon and, from 1892 onwards, at the prestigious École Polytechnique in Paris.

Scientific Contributions

Amagat's legacy lies in his groundbreaking contributions to the field of molecular physics. He dedicated his research to understanding the behavior of gases under varying pressures and temperatures. One of his most notable achievements was the study of the dependence of melting temperature on pressure. Additionally, he investigated the compressibility of liquids and obtained crucial data on the compressibility of permanent gases at 200 degrees Celsius and pressures as high as 3000 atmospheres.

In the process, Amagat discovered deviations from the well-known Boyle's Law at high pressures, revealing new insights into gas behavior. His work laid the foundation for further advancements in gas dynamics and paved the way for the development of the Van der Waals equation.

Unit of Density and Legacy

In recognition of his significant contributions, a non-SI unit of density known as the "Amagat" was named after him. This unit is widely used in the study of fluid properties and symbolizes the lasting impact of Amagat's research.

Emile Amagat passed away in 1915, leaving a legacy of innovation and scientific brilliance that continues to inspire generations of physicists.
