Early Life and Education

Born in Belgium, Josef Hofmann began his musical studies at the Brussels Conservatory under Arthur De Greef. He later pursued further training with the renowned pianist Ferruccio Busoni.

Concert Career

As a young musician, Hofmann enjoyed the patronage of renowned violinist Eugène Ysaÿe. He primarily performed as an ensemble pianist, collaborating with the Brussels Quartet founded by Franz Schörg. In the mid-1920s, he formed the Belgian Court Trio with cellist Alfred Dubois and violinist Maurice Dambois.

Teaching and Scholarship

From 1905, Hofmann taught at the Antwerp Conservatory and from 1919, he became a professor at the Brussels Conservatory. In 1953, he published his seminal work "Music for Keyboard (and, by extension, for lute): An Encyclopedic Guide to Theory and Practice" in Brussels. He also edited publications of works by composers such as Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
