French Author and Traveler

Early Life and Career

The French writer embarked on a journey to the United States of America and Peru in 1855. His American experiences inspired his novel "L'Amazone. Huit jours sous l'équateur" (1856-1857) and the non-fiction works "Grandeur et avenir des États-Unis" (1863) and "Le Pérou" (1875).

Literary Success

In 1858, he published "Récits de Kabylie," which recounted the French military operations in 1857 that culminated in the colonization of Algeria. His novel "Les Aventures de Robin Jouet dans La Guyane française" (1863) became a bestseller and was reprinted numerous times.

Political Involvement

From 1876, he served as a member of the Chamber of Deputies. He vehemently opposed the coup d'état of May 16, 1877.
