Biography of Lucas Cleve
Lucas Cleve was an English writer who gained popularity under the pseudonym Mary Walpole. She was the great-granddaughter of Horace Walpole and the granddaughter of missionary Joseph Wolfe.
Time in India and Folklore Collection
Together with her husband, Colonel Adelina Kingscote, Lucas spent several years in India. During their time there, she compiled a collection of South Indian folklore titled "Tales of the Sun" (1890), which was co-authored with her husband. Additionally, Lucas wrote a book titled "The English Baby in India, and How to Rear It" (1891), offering insights into raising an English child in India.
Return to England and Novels
After returning to England in 1895, Lucas turned to novel writing. Over the next 13 years, she authored 65 novels, with the majority focusing on the lives of women in contemporary society. However, she also explored historical themes in some of her works.
