Economist and Chess Composer

Mihai Dobrescu was a Romanian economist and chess composer. He was a member of the Romanian Academy and authored numerous books and articles on economics.

Early Life and Education

Dobrescu earned his economics degree from Moscow State University in 1956.

Career in Economics

From 1972 to 1982, Dobrescu held leadership positions in the Romanian State Planning Committee. He served as its president from April 1981 to October 1982.

Chess Compositions

Dobrescu began composing chess problems in 1948. He published over 240 compositions, including 210 studies. He won 160 awards in competitions, including 50 first prizes.

International Recognition

Dobrescu was awarded the title of International Grandmaster in 1989 and International Category Judge in 1958 for chess composition.

Preferred Etude Themes

Dobrescu preferred to explore themes of dynamic positional draws, systematic movement of pieces, and mutual zugzwang in his etudes. He won the Romanian Etude Championship eight times.

Specialization in Queen vs. Rook and Bishop (or Knight)

Dobrescu studied the struggle between a queen against a rook and a bishop (or knight). Many of his etudes focus on this theme.
