Biography of Emilio Angel Sanchez

Emilio Angel Sanchez is a former professional tennis player from Spain. He was born on May 29, 1965.

Early Career

Emilio Sanchez began his professional tennis career in 1983 when he played his first matches in ATP Challenger tournaments. In the same year, he became the champion of Spain. His breakthrough came in 1984 when he reached the fourth round of the French Open in singles.

Successful Years

The peak of Sanchez's career came in 1987 and 1988. In 1987, he and his partner Sergio Casal reached the Wimbledon final and won six Grand Prix tournaments. Sanchez also had success in mixed doubles, winning the French Open with Pam Shriver and the US Open with Martina Navratilova. In 1988, Sanchez and Casal won the French Open and the US Open, and reached the final of the Olympic Games in Seoul. They also reached the final of the ATP Finals.

Later Career

In 1989, Sanchez reached his highest ranking in doubles, becoming the world number one. He continued to have success in Grand Slam tournaments, reaching the final of the US Open with his sister Arantxa Sanchez in 1991. In 1992, he had a notable performance at the Barcelona Olympics, reaching the quarterfinals in singles and doubles.

Sanchez won his last ATP tournament in 1995 in Montevideo, partnering with Casal. He retired from professional tennis in 1998 after playing his final tournament in Barcelona.

Post-Playing Career

After retiring, Sanchez and Casal founded a tennis academy in 1998. The academy has branches in Alabama and Florida. Sanchez also served as the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team for three years, leading them to victory in 2008. He later signed a contract with the Brazilian Tennis Federation and became the national coordinator for tennis in Brazil.

Throughout his career, Emilio Angel Sanchez had a successful partnership with his brother Javier Sanchez. They won three doubles tournaments together and faced each other twelve times in singles, with Emilio winning ten of those matches.
