Emma Duffy: A Struggle with Eating Disorders
Emma Duffy, a young British woman who has been left unsupported by the state, has been suffering from eating disorders and personality disorders. It is reported that Duffy attempted suicide nine times before her condition started to improve. However, the National Health Service (NHS) informed her parents that they were not willing to fund her daily care of £1000. As a result, she spiraled back to the edge of despair. Currently, Duffy's loved ones are trying to raise £1 million for her private treatment, fearing for her life.
A Long Battle with Anorexia
Emma Duffy, 24 years old, has been struggling with anorexia for 16 years. She has swallowed razor blades and has been to the emergency department "hundreds of times." She has also been isolated multiple times due to her mental health issues. Doctors have openly told her family that Duffy may not survive due to the failure of her internal organs. However, three weeks ago, doctors at a hospital in Middlesbrough, where Duffy stayed for six months, decided to simply discharge her rather than continue her treatment. The weakened Emma, weighing no more than 38 kg, was left to fend for herself, and all her problems immediately returned.
A Desperate Attempt for Help
Throughout the previous year, she had been on a liquid diet, preparing for her admission to a clinic in York, one of the few in the country that helps patients like Duffy. Her consultant was confident that she would overcome her anorexia there and infected Duffy herself with this confidence. However, the treatment at the clinic cost a hefty £1000 daily, and the NHS refused to finance it. Leaving the hospital alone, Duffy walked onto the railway in Newcastle and overdosed on pills. Luckily, her parents tracked her mobile signal, found her, and called an ambulance. After this incident, they decided to publicize Emma's story, posted her pictures on the Internet, and started to raise money for her treatment. Duffy's loved ones are shocked by the NHS's inability to help those in need. Her father, 57-year-old Alan, who works for the NHS, was unable to influence the situation. Her mother, 51-year-old Beverly, says, "I think the attitude of the NHS is appalling. It all comes down to money. My daughter is now in a worse condition than when she was hospitalized. Discharging her from the hospital was unsafe... I hope we can raise the money ourselves before it's too late for Emma." Beverly mentioned that her daughter gained around 5 kg during her time in the hospital, but then they were told she would not be receiving treatment in York. Today, Emma refuses to eat, including all liquid nutrients, and grows weaker every day.
A Tragic Story
Emma Duffy's sad story began at a very young age. When she was only eight years old, she overheard a dance teacher calling another girl "fat." This was enough to trigger self-destructive behavior in Emma. For many years, she hid her struggles with bulimia and anorexia. Beverly speaks about her daughter's issues, saying, "It's not just about food. It's a mental illness." Entering her teenage years, Duffy continued to tightly control herself, becoming painfully thin, frequently fainting, and starting to lose her hair. It was only at the age of 18 that she confessed to her mother that she had brought herself to such a state. In October 2013, Emma attempted to take her own life. According to reports, this was not the first time. However, it was after this incident that Duffy ended up in the hospital in Middlesbrough. In reality, the NHS can "sustain life" in patients like Duffy today, but it is unable to help them recover. Currently, approximately 1.6 million people in the UK suffer from eating disorders. It is estimated that 10% of this total struggle with anorexia nervosa, which is increasingly being recognized as the most deadly mental illness.
