Ladurie's seminal work, "Montaillou, village occitan de 1294 à 1324," published in 1975, catapulted him to international recognition. Based on the records of the Inquisition's campaign against the Cathar heresy, Ladurie reconstructed the lives of peasants in the village of Montaillou. This microhistorical study became a classic, revolutionizing the way historians approach the past.

In his 1973 and 1978 works, "Le Territoire de l'historien," Ladurie explored the methodological foundations of history. His writings challenged traditional approaches and advocated for a comprehensive examination of historical events.
