Early Life and Career
Emmerich Danzer, a renowned Austrian figure skater, embarked on his skating journey at the tender age of 5. In 1953, he began training under the tutelage of Gertrud "Herta" Wächter.
International Success
Between 1965 and 1968, Danzer reigned supreme as the European Champion. Additionally, he claimed three consecutive World Championships from 1966 to 1968, cementing his status as a dominant force in the sport. His exceptional execution of compulsory figures and captivating free programs earned him accolades and admiration.
Olympic Heartbreak
Despite his impressive achievements, Danzer's Olympic aspirations remained elusive. As a frontrunner at the 1968 Winter Olympics, he stumbled during a compulsory figure, failing to perform it to his usual high standard. Consequently, he finished in a disappointing fourth place, despite a stellar free skate performance.
Post-Competitive Career
Following his departure from amateur skating in 1968, Danzer graced the ice in ice shows such as "Wiener Eisrevue" and "Holiday on Ice" until 1975. From 1975 to 1989, he shared his knowledge and experience as a coach in the United States.
Administrative and Broadcasting Roles
From 1995 to 1997, Danzer served as President of the Austrian Figure Skating Association. Since 2000, he has chaired the "Wiener Eislaufverein" figure skating club. Additionally, Danzer maintains a role in a Viennese insurance company, specializing in sports insurance.
Commentator and Legacy
Danzer's multifaceted career extends to television commentary. For many years, he has partnered with Ingrid Wendl to provide expert analysis of figure skating competitions for Austrian audiences. His graceful presence and insightful observations have made him a beloved figure in the skating world.
