Early Life and Amateur SuccessErcole Baldini was born in Forlì, Emilia-Romagna, Italy. As a young cyclist, he set an impressive amateur record in the hour endurance event, covering 44,870 km in 1955. This remarkable feat earned him the nickname "Forlì Train."
Olympic Triumph and Professional Breakthrough
In 1956, Baldini achieved international fame. He won the gold medal in the road race at the Melbourne Summer Olympics. Shortly after, he broke the professional hour record in Milan, setting a new benchmark of 46,394 km.
Glorious 1958 Season
Baldini signed with a professional team in 1957 and enjoyed a successful season, winning six races, including the Trofeo Baracchi with the legendary Fausto Coppi. He also became the Italian champion.
