Biography of Dr. Erica Frank
Dr. Erica Frank is an innovative medical researcher and physician from America. She specializes in preventive medicine and her research emphasizes the importance of clinicians themselves adopting healthy habits to successfully influence their patients and their desire to emulate doctors. Dr. Frank conducted studies on 1,488 physicians and 1.9 million patients in Canada, Colombia, and Israel, which further supported the belief that medical students should personally develop a proper understanding of health and avoid harmful habits. Recently, Dr. Frank became the President and Executive Director of NextGenU.org, the world's first portal that provides free online medical courses. She founded the portal in 2001.
Early Life and Education
Erica Frank is the daughter of the late Ulrich Anton Frank, a biomedical engineer with numerous patents, and Ruth Esser Frank, a prolific artist and sculptor. She is married to Randall White, a doctor of medical science and psychiatrist from Vancouver. From 1999 to 2006, they lived near Lake Claire and later designed and built their energy-efficient home in Georgia. Dr. Frank earned her bachelor's degree with honors from Smith College in Northampton, MA, her Doctor of Medicine degree from Mercer University in 1988, and her Master of Public Health with a focus on health education and epidemiology from Emory University in 1984. She completed her internship at the Cleveland Clinic in 1988-1989 and worked as a research fellow at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA from 1990-1993, focusing on preventive medicine.
Career and Achievements
Dr. Frank has a wealth of experience in the media. She worked as a health reporter for ABC-TV from 1985-1987, as the editor of the medical journal 'JAMA' from 1987-1988, as a reporter for 'Vogue' magazine from 1988-1989, and as one of the chief editors of the scientific journal 'Preventive Medicine' from 1994-1999. She founded the Ulrich and Ruth Frank Foundation, a foundation dedicated to international healthcare, in 1988 and became its president. Dr. Frank is a staunch advocate for public health and served on the board of the American College of Preventive Medicine from 1997-2003 and Physicians for Social Responsibility from 1998-2009.
Since 2005, Dr. Frank has been the Scientific Director of the Annenberg Physician Training Program. In 2006-2007, she worked for the Occupational Health and Safety Agency for Healthcare (OHSAH) and visited over 50 countries. In 2006, Dr. Frank became the Head of the Canadian Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health at the University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to this, she was a professor, Assistant Chair for Education, and Head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Emory University School of Medicine. One of Erica's most notable achievements is the founding of NextGenU.org, a portal that offers free online medical courses unlike any other organization. The portal produces specific reviews in the field of healthcare and environmental science, collaborating with leading universities, professional societies, and government agencies. Sponsorship support allowed the launch of the first full course in March 2012 and the program became globally accessible in April 2013.
