Early Life and EducationErin Richards was born on May 17, 1986, in Penarth, Wales, UK. Growing up with dyslexia, she faced challenges in reading and pronunciation, leading to some neglect from teachers and ridicule from classmates. This experience shaped her commitment to charity work, particularly in support of the Global Citizen initiative. Richards attended the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama, where she pursued her passion for acting.
Film Career
Richards began her acting career in low-budget horror films. Her first role was in the 2005 Welsh horror "Expiry Date," followed by a small part in the 2008 film "Abraham's Point." Despite these projects, she didn't gain significant recognition. She continued to appear in short films, including "17" (2009) and "Balance" (2010).
Television Breakthrough
Richards made her television debut in the third season of the BBC series "Being Human" as Detective Nancy Reid. Her role in the security drama "The Last Resort" (2012) brought her to the attention of casting directors. She later played a supporting role in the fantasy series "Merlin" (2012).
Critical Success with "Gotham"
In 2013, Richards landed a starring role in the post-apocalyptic thriller "Open Grave." Her performance as Sharon caught the attention of the creators of the hit series "Gotham" (2014-2018). As Barbara Kean, Richards portrayed the love interest of Jim Gordon and later evolved into a complex and troubled villain. "Gotham" earned critical acclaim and received the Critics' Choice Television Awards for Best Action Series.
Personal Life
Richards is in a relationship with artist Henrik Adolfsson. She is known for her privacy, declining offers from magazines like "Maxim" for swimsuit photoshoots. Instead, she focuses on charitable work, particularly through the Global Citizen project and animal rights activism.
