Early Life and Education
Liza Koshy was born in Houston, Texas, to Jean Carol Hertler and Jose Koshy, a petroleum executive. Her mother is of Caucasian descent, while her father is of Indian descent. She has two older sisters. Koshy attended a bilingual education program from kindergarten through fifth grade. In 2014, she graduated from Lamar High School and briefly attended the University of Houston to study business and marketing.
Vine and YouTube Career
In 2013, Koshy began posting short comedy skits on Vine under the username "Lizzza." By the platform's closure in 2017, she had amassed over 5 million followers. She joined YouTube in 2016 and quickly gained traction, interviewing then-President Barack Obama before the election to encourage voter turnout.
Koshy's videos are characterized by their "over-the-top facial expressions, rapid-fire delivery, and willingness to look as ridiculous as possible." She also tackles serious issues such as anxiety, fitting in, and online trolling. In 2017, she became the "fastest YouTuber to gain 10 million followers." As of August 2018, her main YouTube channel has over 15 million subscribers and her two channels combined have received over 2.5 billion views.
Acting Career
In 2016, Koshy landed the role of Violet Adams in the Hulu horror series "Freakish." She returned to the show for its second season in 2017. She also starred in the Tyler Perry comedy film "Boo! A Madea Halloween" and the YouTube Premium series "Jingle Ballin'" that same year.
Koshy's other acting credits include the role of Princess Aubrey in the 2016 comedy "FML" and the recurring role of The Explorer in the 2017 YouTube Premium mystery series "Escape the Night." In 2018, she starred in and executive produced the YouTube Premium series "Liza on Demand."
Hosting and Other Projects
Koshy has hosted red-carpet live streams for the Golden Globes (2017), Nigel Lythgoe's "Every Single Step," and the 2016 MTV Movie Awards (the first non-celebrity to do so). She became a co-host of MTV's "Total Request Live" when it returned as a daily live series in October 2017.
Koshy is also a producer and content developer for MTV. She was the first "social media star" to be featured in Vogue's "73 Questions" video series. At the 2018 Met Gala, she interviewed celebrities for Vogue. She is collaborating on a necklace collection with The Giving Keys, a jewelry company that supports and employs formerly homeless individuals.
Koshy is set to host the reboot of Nickelodeon's game show "Legends of the Hidden Temple," which premieres in June 2018. She has also partnered with Beats Electronics for a commercial that has received four times the views of other celebrity-featured ads.
Personal Life
Koshy dated fellow YouTuber David Dobrik from 2015 to 2018. The couple's breakup has been widely publicized, though the reason for their split remains unknown.
