Erislandy Lara: Cuban Boxing Prodigy and Defector
Early Life and Amateur CareerErislandy Lara was born on April 11, 1983, in Cuba. At the age of 17, he competed in his first national boxing championship, initially weighing in at 57 kilograms. By 2003, he had moved up to the 69-kilogram division, but remained overshadowed by his renowned compatriot, Lorenzo Aragon. When Aragon retired in 2004, Lara seized the opportunity to ascend the ranks, winning the World Championships in China the following year.
Defection from Cuba
On July 22, 2007, Lara and fellow Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux defected from the team during the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro. They were detained by police and deported on August 5, 2007.
Return to Cuba and Escape
Lara and Rigondeaux initially denied signing contracts with professional promoters. However, in an interview with Cuban newspaper Granma, Lara claimed they had met strangers who influenced their decision to defect. Despite facing threats from Fidel Castro, Lara returned to Cuba voluntarily.
Boycott of World Boxing Championships
Castro condemned Lara and Rigondeaux's actions, barring them from the national team. As a result, Cuba boycotted the 2007 World Boxing Championships in Chicago.
Escape to Mexico and Professional Career
In the summer of 2008, Lara escaped Cuba to Mexico using a motorboat. He announced his intention to pursue a professional boxing career and signed with Golden Boy Promotions in Germany. He maintained an undefeated record in his first four fights from 2008 to 2009.
