Early Life and Military Career
Childhood and EducationBorn in 1900 in Nuremberg, Germany, Heinrich von Krosigk was the son of a Bavarian army officer. He received his military education at the Bavarian War Academy.
World War I
In 1915, at the age of 15, von Krosigk volunteered for military service in the Bavarian Guard Jaeger Regiment. By March 1916, he was on the front lines, serving as a platoon commander. He earned the Iron Crosses of both classes and was wounded in action.
Interwar Period
Reichswehr ServiceAfter the war, von Krosigk continued to serve in the Reichswehr, holding various command and staff positions. By the outbreak of World War II, he was a lieutenant colonel serving as an instructor at a military academy.
World War II
Early CampaignsIn 1939, von Krosigk was assigned to staff positions and, later, became the chief of operations for the 22nd Motorized Corps. He participated in the French campaign in 1940 and was awarded additional bars to his Iron Crosses.
Eastern Front
From 1941 onwards, von Krosigk fought in the German-Soviet War. In December 1941, he became chief of staff of the 1st Army Corps. He was awarded the German Cross in Gold in August 1942.
Command of 1st Infantry Division
In July 1943, von Krosigk was promoted to general-major and took command of the 1st Infantry Division. In February 1944, he was awarded the Knight's Cross. In May 1944, he was promoted to general-lieutenant.
Kurland Kessel
In December 1944, von Krosigk was appointed commander of the 16th Army Corps, which was trapped in the Kurland Kessel. In January 1945, he was promoted to general of infantry. On March 10, 1945, he took command of the 16th Army.
Tragic Demise
On March 16, 1945, Heinrich von Krosigk was killed in an air raid. He was posthumously awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross on April 12, 1945.
