German Piano Maker and Innovator
Early Life and CareerJulius Blüthner was a German musical instrument maker and piano manufacturer. After apprenticing as a carpenter, he worked in various musical instrument factories throughout Europe from the age of 17, including in Copenhagen, Stockholm, Paris, Marseille, Madrid, and Lisbon.
Establishment of the Blüthner Factory
In 1858, Blüthner returned to Saxony and established his own piano manufacturing company in Dresden in 1859.
Innovative Designs
Blüthner introduced several innovations in piano construction. In 1865, he began producing particularly small instruments (150 cm in length) known as "Stutzflügel" (truncated grand pianos). In 1875, he designed a highly sensitive resonator, and in 1876, a specially constructed frame with string placement on three levels.
Awards and Recognition
Blüthner's instruments received numerous awards at international exhibitions, including the Grand Gold Medal at the Moscow World Exhibition. The Blüthner factory was awarded the title of Royal Saxon Court Supplier.
Family Legacy
After Blüthner's death, his son Ernst Eugen Blüthner (1866-1910) took over the management of the factory.
