Simone Giertz: The Queen of Shtty Robots
Simone Giertz, a Swedish inventor, robotics enthusiast, television host, and YouTube star, has captured the hearts of nearly 1.2 million YouTube subscribers with her quirky "useless" inventions. Giertz, who dubs herself the "Queen of Shtty Robots," has had a brain tumor the size of a tennis ball successfully removed.
Early Life and Education
Simone Luna Louise Söderlund Giertz was born on November 1, 1990, in Stockholm, Sweden, to television host and novelist Caroline Giertz. Giertz, whose surname derives from the Low German dialect, is a descendant of Swedish entrepreneur Lars Magnus Ericsson, founder of the Ericsson company, and a distant relative of Lutheran theologian and bishop Bo Giertz. At age 16, Giertz spent a year as an exchange student in China, studying basic Mandarin in Hefei and appearing in a sitcom called "Huan Xi Long Xia Dang" as a Canadian woman married to a Chinese man. Giertz also briefly studied physics at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm.
Inspiration and YouTube Channel
Giertz credits Disney character Gyro Gearloose from "Duck Tales" as an early inspiration. She began creating her own "useless" inventions after attending hardware meetups in Stockholm and developed a passion for electronics in 2013. That same year, she launched her YouTube channel, showcasing her "toothbrush helmet." The device, which was featured in the pilot for an unrealized children's television show, was described by Giertz as "a robot arm with a toothbrush attached to a skateboard helmet, programmed to brush my teeth. Say no to bad oral hygiene! My gums are officially bleeding."
Queen of Shtty Robots
On her YouTube channel, Giertz plays the role of an endearing klutz, showcasing her mechanical robots performing mundane tasks and punctuating her videos with jokes. For comedic effect, Giertz often makes her robots mechanically functional but practically useless. These include an alarm clock with a nightmare-inducing wake-up mechanism: a spinning, cotton-stuffed rubber hand that slaps the user's face at 165 revolutions per minute. Giertz has also demonstrated her uArm robotic arm applying lipstick and a "super robot" that spills pumpkin soup on her. While not striving for true utility, Giertz seeks to prove that electronics can be fun and engaging.
Television Host and Collaborations
Giertz joined Tested.com in 2016 to collaborate with former "MythBusters" host and producer Adam Savage, resulting in the creation of a hilariously useless "popcorn helmet." In 2017, Giertz became a host on the Swedish television show "Manick" alongside Nisse Hallberg, where they developed absurd inventions to solve everyday problems.
Brain Tumor and Recovery
On April 30, 2018, Giertz announced on her YouTube channel that she had been diagnosed with a benign brain tumor, which she named "Brian." She shared her fears and anxieties about the upcoming surgery. On May 30, 2018, the tumor was successfully removed.
