Early Life and Education
Born in Germany, Erwin Baur pursued medical studies at the universities of Heidelberg, Freiburg, Strasbourg, and Kiel. In 1903, he earned his doctorate in mycology from the University of Freiburg.
Shift to Genetics
Baur's interests gradually shifted towards genetics. In 1907, he became the first geneticist at the University of Berlin. In 1911, he joined the Higher Agricultural School in Berlin as a professor and in 1914, transferred to the newly established Institute of Genetics.
Founding and Leadership
In 1921, Baur co-founded the German Genetics Society (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Vererbungswissenschaft). In 1927, he assumed leadership of the Kaiser Wilhelm Society Institute of Plant Breeding in Müncheberg.
Contributions to Plant Genetics
Baur's research focused on plant hybrids, interspecific hybridization, growth factors, and plant varieties. He developed principles of genetic (factorial) analysis and studied various mutation forms in the snapdragon plant, conducting long-term genetic studies on this species.
Legacy
Baur's groundbreaking work laid the foundation for modern genetics. His principles of genetic analysis continue to be applied in the field, and his research on plant breeding has had a profound impact on agricultural practices.
