Early Life and Military Career

Born in Laon, France in 1742, Jean Mathieu Philibert Sérurier embarked on his military career in 1804. As a lieutenant of cavalry, he participated in Napoleon's Italian campaign of 1806 and the Spanish campaign of 1808.

Napoleonic Wars

During the Battle of Wagram in 1809, Sérurier's bravery earned him distinction. In the ill-fated Russian campaign of 1812, he served as a captain and adjutant to General Mouton.

Restoration and the Spanish Campaign

Following Napoleon's defeat, Sérurier pledged allegiance to the Bourbons during the Restoration. He played a role in the Spanish campaign.

July Monarchy and Senator

Under the July Monarchy, Sérurier participated in the siege of Antwerp and commanded the Pyrenean army, earning the title of peer. Louis Bonaparte, president of the Second Republic, elevated Sérurier to the position of senator and entrusted him with the command of a military territorial district.
