Early Life and Military Career
Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Suffolkwas born the son of Lieutenant-General Thomas Howard and Mary Howard (née Morton), the daughter of William Morton, Bishop of Meath.
Military Commands and Service
Howard fought in the American Revolutionary War and rose through the ranks, commanding several regiments, including the 3rd Regiment of Foot, 1st (The King's) Dragoon Guards, and 7th (The Queen's Own) Regiment of Dragoons.
Political Career
Howard entered politics, serving as a Member of Parliament for Lostwithiel from 1761 to 1766 and for Stamford from 1768 until his death. He was appointed to the Privy Council of Great Britain.
Governorship of Minorca
From 1766 to 1768, Howard served as Governor of Minorca.Royal Hospital Chelsea
In 1768, Howard was appointed Governor of Royal Hospital Chelsea, a position he held until 1795.
Personal Life
Howard was married twice. His first wife was Lady Lucy Wentworth, daughter of Sir William Wentworth and Isabella Apsley. His second wife, whom he married on May 21, 1771, was Elizabeth Beckford, daughter of Peter Beckford, Speaker of the Jamaican House of Assembly.
