Early Career in Malawi

Edson Iiso Kanyenda's football journey began in 1998 with first division Malawian club Welfare FC (Dedza). In 1999, he turned professional with Malawian Premier League club Dwasco FC (Nkota Kota).

Move to South Africa

In 2003, Kanyenda made a significant move to South Africa, joining Premier Soccer League side Jomo Cosmos in Johannesburg.

International Debut and Recognition

Kanyenda debuted for the Malawian national team in 2000. He was named Malawian Footballer of the Year in both 2001 and 2002, and in 2002, he became the most popular Malawian according to a poll.

First Malawian in Russia

In 2003, Kanyenda became the first Malawian to play in the Russian Premier League, joining FC Rostov despite having the option to sign with Olympique de Marseille. He played in 64 matches for Rostov, scoring 11 goals.

Move to Lokomotiv Moscow and Beyond

In 2005, Kanyenda moved to FC Lokomotiv Moscow in a player exchange with Rostov. However, he struggled to break into the starting lineup, only playing in three Premier League matches.

Olympic Ambassador

In 2006, Kanyenda became an Olympic ambassador for the city of Sochi, which was vying to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Return to Rostov and Loans

From 2006 to 2007, Kanyenda returned to Rostov on loan. In 2008, he was further loaned out to KAMAZ, where he scored nine goals in 44 matches.

Other Russian Clubs and South Africa Return

In 2010, Kanyenda joined FC Rotor in Russia. Later that year, he signed with South African club Moroka Swallows.

Brief Stint in Russia and Final Destination

In April 2011, Kanyenda returned to Russia to play for FC Dynamo Bryansk. He retired from football in 2015 after a brief spell with Malawian club Big Bullets.

Personal Life

Kanyenda's wife, Queen, and three sons: Nathan, Wayne, and Ulewo, reside in Malawi.
