Biography of Estelle Harris

Estelle Harris (born April 4, 1932) is an American actress and comedian. She is best known for her supporting role as Estelle Costanza in the long-running comedy series "Seinfeld." With her petite stature and red hair, Harris became a cult figure after her role in "Seinfeld." It should be noted, however, that success came to Estelle relatively late in her career.

Early Life

Estelle Harris was born and raised in Long Island, New York. Her mother, Anna Harris, was a homemaker, while her father, Isaac Nassbaum, managed a bakery. For a long time, Estelle had no aspirations of becoming an actress and was a typical New York housewife.

Acting Career

After developing an interest in the profession, Estelle was able to secure small roles in "Looking Up" (1977) and "Once Upon a Time in America" (1984). However, her career took off when her son, promoter Greg, advised her to try her luck in California. There, she landed several roles in commercials and a number of television series, including "Brooklyn Bridge," "Law & Order," and "Mad About You."

In 1992, Estelle first appeared in the series "Seinfeld," and her character resonated with viewers. From 1993 onwards, Harris began appearing regularly on the show. In addition to her role on "Seinfeld," Estelle also starred alongside Jerry Stiller, who played her husband on the show, in several telephone company commercials. In 1993, she played a registrar in the short-lived comedy series "Good Advice" starring Shelley Long.

Throughout the 1990s, Harris had small roles in various films, including her memorable performance as Aunt Harriet in "This Is My Life" (1992). In 1997, she played a minor role as a cruise ship passenger in "Out to Sea."

Personal Life

Estelle Harris has been married to Sy Harris since 1953. They have three children, including former New York police officer Tarin Harris. On September 20, 2001, Harris and her husband were involved in a car accident when their tire burst, causing their car to flip twice before coming to a stop on the side of the road. Fortunately, both Estelle and her husband survived.

Even today, Estelle Harris continues her acting career. Until 2008, she portrayed Muriel in the series "The Suite Life of Zack & Cody."
