Estelle Reiner: A Matriarch of American Comedy

Early Life and Artistic Pursuits

Estelle Reiner was born Estelle Lebost on June 5, 1914, in the Bronx, New York City. She attended James Monroe High School alongside renowned character actor Jonathan Harris. After graduating, Estelle pursued a career as an artist.

Meeting and Marrying Mel Brooks

Fate intervened when Estelle met her future husband, Carl Reiner, while designing a stage set at a Catskill Mountain resort. Despite Estelle being eight years Carl's senior, they married in 1943. Their union produced three children: Hollywood star Rob Reiner, artist Lucas Reiner, and author-playwright Annie or Sylvia Ann Reiner.

Evolution into a Jazz Singer

In the 1960s, Estelle discovered a passion for cabaret and eventually became a respected jazz vocalist. She released several records and performed at prestigious Los Angeles nightclubs such as the Cinegrill, Vine Street Bar, and the Grill. She continued performing until the years shortly before her passing.

Acting and Theatrical Influences

Estelle studied acting under renowned Method Acting teacher Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio. She also trained with improvisational theater pioneer Viola Spolin. Estelle appeared in several comedic films, including "Fatso" (1980) and "The Man with Two Brains" (1983) starring Steve Martin.

Iconic Role in "When Harry Met Sally"

Estelle Reiner's most memorable film role came in her son Rob Reiner's 1983 romantic comedy "When Harry Met Sally." She played the unnamed woman who famously gestures to a waitress after Meg Ryan's character feigns an orgasm in a deli. The phrase "I'll have what she's having" uttered by Estelle's character was ranked 33rd on AFI's "100 Greatest Movie Quotes."

Legacy and Enduring Impact

Estelle Reiner passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on October 25, 2008, in her Beverly Hills, California home. She is remembered as a multitalented artist, a loving matriarch, and an integral figure in the annals of American comedy.
