Eugenia Gershoy: American Sculptor and Artist
Early Life and EducationEugenia Morisovna Gershoy was born in Krivoi Rog, Ukraine, to Jewish parents Miriam and Moris Gershoy. She was the youngest of five children, including brothers Alexander, Emil, and Leo, and sister Sofia. In 1903, at the age of 5, Gershoy immigrated with her family to the United States.
In New York City, Gershoy pursued her education at Columbia University and attended the Art Students League (1921-22). There, she studied under renowned artists including A. Sterling Calder, Leo Lentelli, and Kenneth Hayes Miller.
Artistic Influences and Collaborations
Throughout the 1920s and early 1930s, Gershoy worked closely with artist Harry Gottlieb in a studio in Woodstock, New York. She drew inspiration from her travels to England, France, Mexico, and Guatemala. In 1940, she held her first solo exhibition at the Robinson Gallery in New York.
Move to San Francisco and Teaching Career
In 1942, Gershoy relocated to San Francisco. She taught ceramics at the California School of Fine Arts in 1946. Her work continued to evolve, showcasing her mastery of carving in materials such as chestnut, beech, and fieldstone.
International Travels and Global Perspectives
Gershoy's artistic horizons expanded with her extensive travels. In 1955, she embarked on a journey to India, Africa, and the Middle East, which significantly influenced her work.
