Childhood and Education
Evhen Hutsalo was born on January 14, 1937, in the village of Staryy Zhyvotov (now Novozhyvotiv) in the Vinnytsia Oblast, Ukraine. He spent his childhood and school years in the villages of Nova Hreblya and Hulivtsy. After graduating high school in the nearby village of Kordelivtsy, Hutsalo enrolled in the Philology Department of the Nizhyn Pedagogical Institute, from which he graduated in 1959.
Career as a Writer and Journalist
Following his graduation, Hutsalo worked for several newspapers in Vinnytsia, Lviv, and Chernihiv, as well as the Kyiv literary journal "Literaturna Ukraina" and the publishing house "Radianskyi Pysmennyk". He became a member of the Union of Writers of Ukraine in 1962.
Literary Works
Hutsalo's first collection of short stories, "Lyudi Sered Lyudei" (People Among People), was published in 1962 and established his place among the "sixtiers" movement in Ukrainian literature. Throughout his career, he wrote numerous novellas, short stories, novels, poems, and essays. His most notable works include:

Epic and Fantastical Works
In his later years, Hutsalo became known for his epic works, such as "Blud" (Fornication, 1984) and "Improvisatsiya Ploti" (Improvisation of the Flesh, 1993), and the novel "Ulumji", inspired by his travels to Kalmykia. He also achieved recognition for his burlesque-realistic trilogy:
- "Cholovic Vizajmy, abo Khomaz Nevcarnyy ta Lukuvyy" (A Hired Husband, or Khomaz the Treacherous and Cunning, 1981)
- "Chastne Zhyttya Fenomena" (The Private Life of the Phenomenon, 1982)
- "Parad Planet" (Parade of Planets, 1984)
Controversial LegacyHutsalo's legacy remains complex due to his controversial publicism, particularly his сборник публицистических статей о России и русском народе "Mentalitet Ordi" (The Mentality of the Horde, 1996). Published posthumously, the collection contains harsh criticisms of Russian colonialism and imperialism. His work has been subject to criticism as being openly Russophobic.
Honors and Awards
Hutsalo's contributions to Ukrainian literature were recognized with several awards, including the State Prize of Ukraine named after Taras Shevchenko in 1985 for his novella "Saiyhora" and the collection of short stories "Proletely Koni".
Hutsalo died on July 4, 1995, and was buried at the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.
