Early Life and Career
Evgeni Nabokov was born on July 25, 1975, in Ust-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan. He began playing hockey at the age of six and quickly rose through the ranks of the local hockey program. Nabokov made his debut for the Kazakhstan national team at the 1994 World Championship in Group C1.
Move to North America
In 1997, Nabokov moved to North America to pursue his NHL dream. He spent two seasons in the American Hockey League (AHL) before making his NHL debut with the San Jose Sharks on January 1, 2000.
Breakthrough in San Jose
During the 2000-01 season, Nabokov seized an opportunity to become the Sharks' starting goaltender after an injury to Stephen Shields. He excelled in the role, earning the Calder Trophy as the league's top rookie and becoming a key part of the Sharks' success in the years that followed.
NHL Career Highlights
Nabokov spent 10 seasons with the Sharks, establishing himself as one of the league's most consistent goaltenders. He set multiple NHL records for most wins (353) and shutouts (59) among goaltenders from former Soviet Union countries in regular season play, as well as most games played (86), wins (42), and shutouts (7) in Stanley Cup playoff appearances.
World Championship Victory
In 2008, Nabokov helped lead the Russian national team to victory at the World Championship. He was instrumental in Russia's success, posting impressive stats and earning a reputation as one of the world's best goaltenders.
Post-San Jose Career
After the 2009-10 season, Nabokov signed a contract with Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) team SKA Saint Petersburg. However, his stint in Russia was short-lived, and he soon returned to the NHL with the Detroit Red Wings and later the New York Islanders.
Retirement and Coaching Career
In 2015, Nabokov announced his retirement from professional hockey. He joined the San Jose Sharks as a scout and goaltending development coach in 2015 and was appointed the team's goaltending coach in 2019.
