Biography of Eva Brunne
Early Life and EducationEva Brunne was born in Sweden and attended Lund University, where she studied theology. After completing her studies, she was ordained as a pastor in the Lund diocese in 1978.
Pastoral Career
Brunne initially served as a pastor in Karlskrona before moving to Sundbyberg, where she served for eight years. She then served as a pastor in Flemingsberg for another eight years. In 2006, Brunne became the dean of the Stockholm diocese.
Becoming the Bishop of Stockholm
In May 2009, the Church of Sweden held elections for the bishop of Stockholm. Brunne was elected with 413 votes against 365 votes, making her the fifth female bishop in Sweden and the first openly lesbian bishop in the Lutheran Church.
Controversies and Achievements
The ceremony of ordination was reportedly boycotted by representatives of some national churches. However, according to Anders Wejryd, the archbishop and head of the Church of Sweden, it is not customary for higher church hierarchs to attend such ceremonies and they usually delegate their representatives.
Brunne is in a same-sex marriage with Gunilla Linden, who is also a priest. Their relationship has been blessed by the church, and together they are raising a son.
