Early Life and Career
Eva Mónica Anna Ekvall Johnson was born on March 15, 1983, in Caracas, Venezuela. Growing up, Ekvall moved between the United States and her native Venezuela, becoming fluent in both English and Spanish. She attended the Academia Washington of Caracas and studied journalism at Universidad Santa María.

Miss Venezuela and Modeling Career
At age 17, Ekvall won the Miss Venezuela 2000 crown and came in fourth in the Miss Universe pageant the following year. As a Buddhist, she became the first Miss Venezuela not to identify as Christian. Ekvall also appeared in various magazines, including Sambil and Ocean Drive.

Career in Entertainment and Media
After dabbling in acting on the TV show "Las Rottenmayer," Ekvall worked as a TV host on Televen. She also had stints in radio and as an online interviewer for the newspaper Sexto Poder.

Marriage and Family
Eva Ekvall married radio producer John Fabio Bermúdez in September 2007. Their daughter, Miranda, was born in July 2009.
Diagnosis and Treatment
In February 2010, Ekvall was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy, radiation, and a double radical mastectomy. Throughout her treatment, Ekvall took photographs that became the basis for her book, "Out of Focus," published in December 2010. She also became involved in the group SenosAyuda to raise awareness about breast cancer.
Loss and Legacy
When Ekvall's cancer recurred, she moved to the United States and received treatment at University General Hospital in Houston, Texas. She passed away on December 17, 2011, surrounded by her husband and parents. Ekvall's family stated that her body would be cremated in Houston. Many Venezuelans, including prominent artists and politicians, expressed their condolences. John Bermúdez tweeted a photo of him and Eva holding hands in her hospital bed, with the caption "Forever together... I love you, wife." On March 1, 2012, John launched the Eva Ekvall Foundation.
