Biography of Martina Kocher

Martina Kocher is a Swiss luger who has been representing Switzerland since 1999. She is a world champion, two-time silver medalist at the World Championships, and has competed in three Winter Olympic Games.

Early Life and Career

Martina Kocher was born on March 14, 1985 in Biel, Canton of Bern, to a family involved in bobsleigh and luge sports. She began actively participating in luge at the age of nine and in 1999, she qualified for the national team and started competing in various international junior events. In the 2003/04 season, she made her debut in the World Cup, finishing sixteenth in the German Altenberg stage. She also participated in the European Championships for the first time, finishing eleventh in Oberhof. In the 2004/05 season, she ranked twentieth in the world rankings of top lugers, while finishing twenty-first at the World Championships in Park City, USA.

Olympic Games and Continued Success

Thanks to a series of successful performances, Kocher earned the opportunity to represent her country at the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin, where she finished ninth in the women's singles event. She ended the Cup cycle with a thirteenth-place finish overall and placed eleventh in the European Championships in Winterberg, Germany. In the following season, she achieved her highest overall ranking in the World Cup, finishing in sixth place. At the 2007 World Championships in Igls, Austria, she improved her performance to twelfth place. The following year, she finished eleventh in the overall World Cup standings and came eighth in the German Oberhof World Championships. She also finished eleventh in the European Championships in Cervinia, Italy.

Later Career and Olympic Participation

In the following season, Kocher repeated her World Cup result from the previous year, while finishing sixteenth at the Lake Placid World Championships. In 2010, Martina Kocher competed in the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, aiming to contend for medals, but had to settle for seventh place in the women's singles event. She finished eleventh in the World Cup for the third consecutive season and obtained an eighth-place finish in the European Championships in Sigulda, Latvia.

Recent Achievements

In the 2010/11 season, Kocher showed improvement in her results, finishing ninth in the World Cup standings and eighth at the World Championships in Cesana. In the following season, she closed out the top ten in the world's strongest luge athletes, while finishing fourteenth at the 2012 World Championships. In 2014, she competed in the Olympic Games in Sochi, finishing ninth in the women's singles event.

At the 2015 World Championships, Kocher had an unsuccessful performance, finishing sixteenth. She achieved sixth place in the overall World Cup standings but did not reach the podium in any of the stages. In the 2016 World Championships in Königssee, she became a world champion, winning the sprint event for the first time in the history of the championships. In the individual competitions, she won the silver medal, finishing third in both attempts and narrowly losing to the nearly unbeatable Natalie Geisenberger. At the 2017 World Championships, Martina was unable to defend her sprint world champion title but still achieved a commendable result, winning the silver medal in the sprint event and finishing seventh in the individual competitions.

Currently, Martina Kocher lives and trains in Bern. In her free time outside of luge, she enjoys playing the flute and dancing. In addition, she is a soldier in the Swiss Army and occasionally participates in amateur athletics competitions.
