Eva Mylott was a prominent Australian contralto who gained recognition both domestically and internationally. The paternal grandmother of actor and director Mel Gibson, she left an indelible mark on the world of opera.
Early Life and Musical Roots
Born in Tuross Head, New South Wales, Australia, on January 1, 1875, Eva was the daughter of Irish immigrants Patrick and Mary Mylott. The family's wealth and status allowed Eva to pursue her musical education. She studied under renowned teachers such as Madame Christine, a Canadian opera singer, and others.
Rising Star and International Career
By 1897, Eva had become a rising talent in the Sydney music scene. In 1902, inspired by the success of Australian soprano Nellie Melba, she left Australia for Europe. In Paris, she studied under Madame Marchesi, Melba's teacher. She then embarked on a tour of the United States, performing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City alongside Melba.
Family and Later Life
On June 17, 1917, Eva married businessman John Hutton Gibson. They had two sons, Hutton Peter Gibson and Alexis Mylott Gibson. Tragically, Eva's life was cut short when she died on March 20, 1920, from an accidental fall in Chicago. Her eldest son, Hutton, became the father of Mel Gibson.
Protege and Legacy
Eva's cousin, Marie Narelle, also known as Molly Ryan, was another renowned opera singer who may have been proteged by Melba. Narelle's recordings have been preserved and released by Screensound Australia.
