Early Life and Career on Stage
Eva Wilma was born into a family of Russian-Jewish and German heritage. She pursued her passion for the arts from an early age, with the support of her parents. After training as a ballerina and performing in the "Arena" theatre, she made her film debut in 1953.
Rise to Stardom on Television
In 1954, Eva Wilma's career took a major turn when she was cast in the lead role of the sitcom "Hello, Sweetheart!", adapted from the American show "I Love Lucy." The series became a massive hit, and Wilma's pairing with actor John Herbert earned them the nickname "the Sweet Couple." It aired from 1954 to 1963.
Breakout Roles in Soap Operas
During the 1970s, Wilma solidified her status as a Brazilian icon with her memorable performances in the soap operas "Women from the Sand" and "Journey." In "Women from the Sand," she portrayed twin sisters Ruth and Raquel without the use of advanced technology, earning her critical acclaim. In "Journey," she tackled the theme of the connection between the real and spiritual worlds, inspired by the teachings of Allan Kardec.
Success at Globo and Theatre Accolades
In 1980, Eva Wilma moved to Rio de Janeiro and joined the television network Globo. Among her notable roles during this period were "The Wheel of Fire" in 1986 and "Untamed" in 1997. She also played the lead role of Dr. Martha in the hospital drama "In a Woman's World" from 1998 to 1999. As one of Brazil's foremost theatre actresses, Wilma has performed in over 30 stage productions, garnering awards such as the Molière and the Shell Award for her lead role in José Wilker's "Dearest Mommy."
Personal Life
Eva Wilma's first marriage to actor John Herbert lasted from 1955 to 1976, and they had two children together. In 1977, she married actor and director Carlos Zara, and they remained together until his death in 2002 due to complications from esophageal cancer. Wilma is a grandmother of four.
