Evan Bayh

Evan Bayh is an American politician who served as a United States Senator from Indiana and a member of the Democratic Party.

Early Life and Education

Bayh was born in Terre Haute, Indiana, to former Indiana Senator Birch Bayh. He graduated from Indiana University Bloomington in 1978 and received his law degree from the University of Virginia in 1981.

Political Career

After practicing law in Indianapolis, Bayh became Indiana Secretary of State in 1986. He was elected Governor of Indiana in 1988 and served until 1997. From 1997 to 1998, he worked as a partner at the law firm Baker & Daniels.

In 1998, Bayh was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat. He was re-elected in 2004.

Iraq War

Bayh was a supporter of the overthrow of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. In 2002, he published an article defending his views on the matter. He co-sponsored and later presented H.J.Res. 114, which authorized the use of U.S. military force against Iraq. His support earned him praise from President Bush and Senator McCain.
