Evan Strong: Skateboarder, Cyclist, and Paralympic Snowboarder
Evan Strong is an American skateboarder, cyclist, and para-snowboarder who competes in snowboard cross in the SB (standing) category. He is an Olympic champion and the 2012 World Champion in para-snowboarding. He is also a multiple X-Games medalist.
Early Life and Sports Background
Evan Strong was born and raised on the island of Maui, Hawaii. As a child, he enjoyed skateboarding and surfing. In 2004, at the age of 19, Strong was struck by a drunk driver while riding his motorcycle at 40 miles per hour. The accident resulted in the amputation of his left leg below the knee.
Determined to continue living an active lifestyle, Strong regained his skateboarding skills after an intense period of rehabilitation and fitting with his prosthesis. He then began experimenting with snowboarding.
Transition to Snowboarding
Strong's first attempt at snowboarding took place in Sun Valley, Idaho. Inspired by his previous skateboarding experience, he said, "I basically decided, I'm going to try everything I can. I had never been on a snowboard before, so I was like, 'I have to learn how to do this. This is like a skateboard.'"
