Évariste Ndayishimiye: President of Burundi
Early Life and EducationÉvariste Ndayishimiye was born in 1968 in the commune of Giheta. He studied law at the University of Burundi in Bujumbura.
Military Career
In 1995, Ndayishimiye joined the Forces for the Defense of Democracy (FDD). He rose through the ranks, eventually commanding combat operations under President Pierre Nkurunziza. He was known by the nom de guerre "N.Eva."
After the war, Ndayishimiye oversaw the integration of FDD fighters into the Burundian army. He held senior positions, including Chief of Staff for Human Resource Management and Quartermaster.
Political Career
Ndayishimiye served as Minister of the Interior and Public Security from 2006 to 2007. He then became the President's military advisor. In 2009, he became President of the National Olympic Committee of Burundi.
Presidency
In 2020, Ndayishimiye was nominated as the FDD candidate for President. He won the election on May 20, 2020, with 68.72% of the vote. He was inaugurated on June 18, 2020, slightly earlier than scheduled.
As President, Ndayishimiye has implemented a number of reforms, including improving governance and reducing corruption. He has also worked to strengthen Burundi's economy and promote peace and stability.
