Early Life and Education

Evdokia Ivanovna Verkhovinets-Kosteva was born on March 1, 1885, in Poltava, Ukraine. Her father, Ivan Pogorely, was a typesetter who later became a choirmaster at an eparchial school. From age eight, Evdokia studied and sang in her father's choir and also performed in the drama studio of the Russian theater "Krasny Fakel."

Career as an Actress and Singer

During a tour, renowned actors Nikolai Sadovsky, Ivan Maryanenko, and Severin Pankovsky visited a rehearsal. Evdokia impressed them with her performance in Nikolai Lysenko's cantata "Beat the Rapids." Despite her small stature, Sadovsky quipped that he had heard her voice but not seen her as an artist.

At age 21, Evdokia joined Nikolai Sadovsky's troupe to perform in the first permanent Ukrainian theater in Kyiv. There, she met Vasily Verkhovinets, whom she married two years later.

National Recognition and Soviet Power

Shortly before the revolution, the Verkhovinets returned to Poltava and joined the "Society of Ukrainian Actors" led by Ivan Maryanenko. During the early Soviet years, Poltava became a national center for arts and theater. Evdokia worked there for a decade, performing widely with a group of soloists.

Her husband, Vasily Verkhovinets, founded the "Women's Choral Theatrical Ensemble" ("Zhinkhorans"). The group innovatively staged songs. Evdokia became its director.

In the mid-1930s, Vasily staged ceremonial dances for Nikolai Lysenko's opera "Natalka-Poltavka" at the first "Decade of Ukrainian Literature and Art" in Moscow.

Tragedy and Exile

In 1938, Vasily Verkhovinets was arrested and executed on charges of "freethinking." Evdokia was exiled to Kazakhstan, where she remained from 1938 to 1944.

Return and Legacy

After returning to her native Poltava region, Evdokia performed with the regional philharmonic society. She initially recited poetry and later led the ensemble again, touring until her retirement in 1959.

Evdokia Ivanovna Verkhovinets-Kosteva passed away on November 15, 1988, in Kyiv. Her legacy continues as a pioneer of Ukrainian theater and music.
