Eve Arden, an American actress, was born on April 30, 1908, in the small town of Mill Valley, California. She was the daughter of Lucille and Charles Peter Cadence, who divorced when she was still a child. At the age of 16, Eve dropped out of school and joined a theater troupe. In 1929, she made her film debut in a small role in the movie "The Love Parade," which was one of the early successful films produced by Columbia Pictures.
Her Broadway debut took place in 1934 in one of the productions of "Ziegfeld Follies." Her active film career began in 1937 after portraying Eve in the film "Stage Door." This role was quite successful, and she started receiving offers for new film roles. In the following years, she appeared in popular movies such as "Ziegfeld Girls" (1941) and "Cover Girl" (1941), alongside Rita Hayworth. In 1945, Arden played one of her most famous roles as Ida Corwin in the film "Mildred Pierce," for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Eve also had a successful career on radio, where she played the role of high school teacher Connie Brooks in the radio series "Our Miss Brooks" from 1948 to 1957. Then, from 1952 to 1956, she portrayed the same character in the television series, for which she won an Emmy Award, and in the film adaptation in 1956. This character was so popular that in 1952, Eve became an honorary member of the American Association of Education.
Arden appeared in numerous television shows, including "Bewitched," "Great Performances," "Alice," and "The Love Boat." At the same time, she continued to perform on stage, playing leading roles in productions such as "Hello, Dolly!" and "Auntie Mame." In 1967, she was awarded the Sarah Siddons Award for her work in Chicago theaters.
In 1985, Eve published her autobiography, "Three Phases of Eve." Her contributions to the film industry were recognized with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6714 Hollywood Boulevard, while her contributions to radio led to her induction into the Radio Hall of Fame.
From 1949 to 1957, Eve was married to Ned Bergen. In 1952, she married Brooks West, who passed away in 1984. Eve had four children with Brooks.
Eve Arden passed away from cancer at her home in Los Angeles on November 12, 1990, at the age of 82.
