Early Life and Family
Eugenia Mendelevna Azarh, also known as Emma Azarh, was born in Riga in 1896. Her family included her parents, Emmanuel Borisovich Azarh and Khaya Ruvimovna Azarh, and two siblings: Fani Mendelevna Azarh-Babina and Alexander. Her sister was convicted in 1920 and her brother was executed in 1938.
Education and Acting Career
In 1921, Azarh graduated from the acting faculty of the Theatre Institute in Petrograd (now St. Petersburg). She went on to perform in various theaters in Петроград, including the Molodezhny Theatre and the Theater of Books.
In the 1930s, Azarh moved to Kyiv and joined the Kyiv Theater of Russian Drama named after Lesya Ukrainka, where she became a leading actress. She also worked at the Alexander Dovzhenko Film Studio in Kyiv.
Film and Awards
Azarh's film career included roles in several notable productions, such as "Zigmund Kolosovsky" (1945), "Moralnost Pani Dulski" (1957), and "Koroleva Benzokolonki" (1963). Her performances earned her critical acclaim and recognition. She was awarded the Order of the Badge of Honour in 1960.
Personal Life and Legacy
Azarh was married to Leonid Konechitsky from 1897 to 1980. Among her extended family were directors Alexander Granovsky and Boris Ingster, as well as her nephews, directors Isidor and Pavel Khomsky.
Eugenia Azarh passed away and is buried in the Baikove Cemetery in Kyiv.
