Early Life and Education
Taras Brahar is a prominent Ukrainian historian and current member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian Parliament. He graduated with honors from the history faculty at Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where he pursued his master's degree and later embarked on doctoral studies.
Academic and Professional Career
Brahar is a highly respected academic, serving as the founder, director, and Polish language instructor of the "Linguist" educational project. His professional experience also includes an internship at the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs.
Political Involvement
In the 2019 Ukrainian presidential election, Brahar was a member of the district election commission in Vinnytsia Oblast for the presidential candidate, Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Subsequently, he ran for Parliament as a candidate for the "Servant of the People" party, securing a position as a deputy in the Verkhovna Rada.
Legislative Positions
As a member of Parliament, Brahar has assumed leadership roles within the Committee on Freedom of Speech, as well as the parliamentary groups for inter-parliamentary relations with Algeria and Vietnam.
International Sanctions
On December 7, 2020, Brahar was included in a list of Ukrainian individuals sanctioned by the Russian government.
Controversies
In February 2020, Brahar came under fire for suggesting during a television broadcast that a pensioner who had voted for his party sell her dog to pay for her utility bills. This remark sparked widespread criticism and inspired numerous online memes. The opposition parties of European Solidarity, Batkivshchyna, and the Opposition Platform - For Life condemned Brahar's statement. In response, OPZzh deputy Ilya Kiva launched a "help the pensioner" challenge, paying her utility bills and donating dog food to her pet.
